Overview

51.Usagiya.jpg

Usagiya, a Japanese-style confection store, has been business since 1913. The most popular item here is Dorayaki (bean-paste pancake). As it does not have a long shelf life, it may not be good to bring it outside Japan as a souvenir. If you try it as soon as you purchase it here, you can enjoy the aroma of the freshly made lukewarm Dorayaki and the juicy beam jam inside. Kisaku-monaka(喜作最中, wafer filled with sweet bean paste) and Kisaku-yokan(喜作羊羹, sweet bean paste) are recommended as souvenirs. The rabbit figurine on the roof welcomes customers.

Recommendation

Our bestsellers are “Dorayaki” and “Kisaku-monaka”(喜作最中).
◆Dorayaki (bean-paste pancake)
Very soft mashed bean paste (uncrushed) made of adzuki beans produced in Tokachi is used. Brimful bean paste is stuffed into pancakes with crispy top made from dough mixed with honey from Chinese milk vetch flowers.
◆Kisaku-monaka(喜作最中, wafer filled with sweet bean paste)
Half-moon shaped wafer made of roasted barley flour has smooth bean paste inside. The bean is mixed with a small amount of Dainagon beans soaked in honey for additional taste. The written seal of Kisaku, the founder of Usagiya is on the center of wafer.
